Hello to the parents and guardians of Handley High School freshmen,
This website was created by me, Mrs. Love, the 9th grade English teacher, to help students better navigate their first year in high school as well as keep you aware of what is happening in my class. At the start of the school year students walked through the website with Mrs.Love and understand they will be using the site a a near daily basis both in and out of class. Students also know that if they miss a day they can come to this site to see what they have missed.
On this homepage you can find all of the information and rules concerning English 9 as well as links to the high school's and district's websites. If you want to see what we are up to in my class or just keep track of your student's assignment, use the "English 9A" and "English 9B" tabs above. If this is your student's first trimester with me, they are currently in 9A. If this is their second trimester with me, they are currently in 9B. Under each tab are the units we will cover in that trimester. Each unit will be updated daily as the class proceeds through the material.
If you have any questions or concerns, all of my contact information can be found below.

Welcome to English 9!
In this course students will practice reading comprehension through the study of world literature, expand their lexicon with the use of poetry and informational text, improve their writing skills through short answers, journal entries, and essay, strengthen their communication skills with reviews and debates, and continue their mastery of the English language, as aligned with Common Core standards. |
Furthermore, students will be expected to demonstrate a level of maturity befitting their age, engage in self-discipline, which will include organization and accountability, and actively take advantage of their right to an education by participating during class, completing assignments as assigned, and showing respect towards their classmates, the teacher, and themselves.
LIKE ALL THINGS WORTHWHILE IN LIFE,
GRADES ARE NOT GIVEN, THEY ARE EARNED
Students will be provided with a syllabus, which they are expected to keep for reference, outlining all expectations, requirements, and other important information for English 9. This syllabus can be found to the right. Students are encouraged to download a copy on their school laptop as a back up. Guardians are welcome to download a copy as well.
Important information from the class syllabus can be found below, including... - An Overview of English 9A & 9B - How Assignments Will Be Graded - Mrs. Love's Late Work Policy - Student Journals - Mrs. Love's Make-up Work Opportunity - Mrs. Love's Plagiarism and Cheating Policy - How Detentions Are Given and Served - Mrs. Love's "5 Rules of Respect" -Other Related Documents |

To pass this class students will need to apply themselves, take thorough notes, complete assignments correctly and on time, must have no more than 4 unexcused absences from English 9 during the length of the course, and end each trimester in English 9A & 9B with a minimum grade of 60.
HIGH SCHOOL IS A NEW CHALLENGE.
PREPARED, STUDENTS CAN SUCCEED
CLASS OVERVIEW
English 9 complies with the required contents for the Alabama Course of Study and consists of two 12-week courses covering literature, writing and language, research, and speech. Each trimester will be broken into approximately five units that will build off of and connect with one another. Please note that some units may be subject to change due to class needs, scheduling complications, or other unforeseen circumstances. Outlines of these units can be found on their respective "English 9A" and "English 9B" pages and related and information for each unit will be added as it progresses. Additional resources related to both English and general learning skills can also be found on the "Student Resource" and "Parent Resource" pages. |
GRADING SCALES
All submitted assignments and assessments will either be graded as a letter grade or as a completion grade. With a letter grade, student work will be graded on the following scale. For larger assignments, rubrics will be provided to the students and posted online. A 100% - 90% B 89% - 80% C 79% - 70% D 69% - 60% F 59% & Lower For a completion grade, student work will receive either a pass or a fail based off of the completion of their work. Incomplete assignments will receive zero points even if submitted. Students are highly encouraged not to take zeros on completion grades as they will add up. |
Student are responsible for make-up work for excused absences as designated by handbook guidelines.(i.e. excuses must be presented within 3 days and make-up work must be completed within one week).
All late work without an excused absence will lose 10% of its final grade for each day it is turned in late, including non-school days.

JOURNALING
To encourage personal growth, self-reflection, and the skill of expressing oneself, students will start a writing journal in English 9 that will follow them through their English courses at Handley High School. In English 9 students will respond to provided journal prompts every Friday (or as the week allows). These journals entries will be graded on completion of the specified word count and addressing of the prompt and will not be read by anyone but the student and teacher, unless invited by the student. The English Department hopes this practice of frequent journaling will help students not only grow as individuals but help them see growth looking back their senior year. |
WEEKLY NOTES
The ability to take notes in a quick and effective manner is an important skill for both academics and the work force. Starting in English 9 and continuing on through the rest of their English courses at Handley High School, students will be expected to take notes in a designated space every day and use these notes to review subject material for assignments, quizzes, tests, and finals. If a student misses class they are expected to get the day's notes from a classmate if able or see Mrs. Love during her office hours to review the lesson. Prefabricated notes will not be provided. Every Friday (or as the week allows) students will receive a completion grade for the notes taken that week. |
CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED
FINAL FRIDAY
The Friday after a progress report (or as the month allows), students with a class grade of 75% or above will have a "free" day. Students who did not maintain a C average will be given a packet of all their missing work and use this day to, independently, complete these assignments. All missing work must be submitted by the following Monday and will be graded with a 20% penalty for failure to complete the work when assigned. If a student does not take advantage of this opportunity to make up their work, the missing assignments will become permanent zeros in the grade book. Exceptions and extensions will not be made. |
STUDENT FOLDERS
To help students stay organized, they are given a folder at the start of the year to keep important documents, homework calendars, class notes, and provided "vouchers" in. This folder will be checked once a week as time allows to make sure students are making note of homework and large assignments, paying attention in class, and know their vocabulary words for each unit. The vouchers mentioned will be given to students at the start of each trimester and include bathroom passes, tardy passes, and others, all of which can be used during the year or turned in for extra credit at the end of a trimester. |
DETENTIONS
If a student fails to follow any Handley High School rules, as outlined in the Student Handbook, one of Mrs. Love's "Five Rules of Respect", engage in cheating and/or plagiarism, or otherwise creates a disruption of the learning environment, they will receive a detention to be served before or after school in Mrs. Love's room during her office hours. All detention assignments will be followed with a call home. Failure to attend these detentions will result in a write up and a week of lunch detention. Continued disruption will result in further action. Minor disruptions will receive three verbal warnings before a detention is assigned. |
PLAGIARISM & CHEATING
To prevent student's from failing to take full advantage of the educational opportunity presented to them here at Handley High School, all forms of plagiarism and cheating will be penalized with an automatic zero on the assignment - including test grades - and a detention. Furthermore, suspicion of cheating and/or plagiarism will, by default, be penalized until evidence proving the case otherwise is presented. During English 9A&B, students will review what is considered plagiarism and cheating. |
CELL PHONE POLICY
Students may use their cell phones in class for assignments, projects, and participation, so they will be allowed to keep their phones during class. However, they are NOT allowed to use their phones unless given permission by the teacher and are expected to use their phones for class related reasons. If a student uses their phone when they should not or for something they should not, the phone will be confiscated and turned into the office and picked up per Handley High School policy as found in the Student Handbook.
After a student's phone has been taken up for the second time, they will earn a spot in Mrs.Love's "Cell Jail". This will be a designated spot in the classroom, labeled with the student's name, where offending phones are expected to be placed before the start of class and can not be picked up until given permission by the teacher at the end of class.

TRIMESTER EXTRA CREDIT PROJECTS
Under no circumstances, will extra credit be given on request. Students will, however, have the opportunity to earn extra credit through out the trimester. One of these opportunities is a trimester project. These projects will require a significant amount of work and so are not something students can "just do overnight", but are worth a significant amount of potential points. All students are encouraged to take advantage of one of these projects. For more information click the appropriate button below.
Students are only allowed to submit one extra credit project per trimester. This does not include extra credit that can be earned through daily assignments, homework, and assessments. The extra credit projects will be graded on scale and not as a completions grade. This means that simply turning in one of these extra credit projects does NOT guarantee a student all of the potential points.
